Smiling and laughing are signs of a life well-lived, but lines and wrinkles around your mouth are no laughing matter! If you are starting to notice creases and folds at the edges of your mouth, Dr. Brad Mozaffari, our Registered Nurse, Hilary Black, and the team at Belladerma Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Care Center can help.

What Causes Marionette Lines?

Before delving into treatments, Dr. Moz wants to establish why marionette lines develop.

Marionette lines are the vertical lines that extend down the sides of the mouth to the chin. They are caused by a few factors. When we are young, our facial fat serves a valuable purpose: it supports the skin and helps keep it looking smooth and taut. However, with age facial fat sags and the skin loses collagen and elastin. With sagging facial fat, the skin creases deepen. Also, the depressor anguli oris muscle (or DAO muscle) can pull down the corners of the mouth, creating noticeable wrinkles.

Treating Marionette Lines

Dr. Moz and our Registered Nurse, Hilary Black, offer treatments to soften the appearance of marionette lines and create youthful, healthier looking skin.

We commonly use dermal fillers to restore facial volume, which fills out wrinkles and folds. Some of the fillers we use are formulated with hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that also attracts moisture to the area to keep it looking plump and supple.

These injectables are most effective for mild to moderate wrinkles and provide temporary results that must be maintained with regular treatments. We will select the right filler or combination of injectables based on factors such as the severity of your wrinkles and your desired results.

With aging, deeper wrinkles or folds may require surgical treatment, because the creases may be too deep to soften without pulling and lifting the skin through facelift surgery.
