Liposculpture is a fantastic procedure if you are bothered or embarrassed by excess subcutaneous body fat. By removing fat cells, liposculpture shapes the treated area, giving you a slimmer and sexier contour.  CoolSculpting is a non-surgical alternative to removal of smaller volumes of fat.

You may not realize that skin elasticity, or the ability of your skin to stretch and then return to its normal state, is critical to attaining good outcomes. Below, San Diego liposculpture surgeon Brad Mozaffari explains why:

Understanding Skin Elasticity

Skin elasticity is largely determined by collagen and elastin, which are normally plentiful during youth but dwindle with age. As your body stops producing as much collagen and elastin, what was once plump, youthful skin slowly starts to become more loose and saggy. Factors like pregnancy, weight loss, sun damage, tobacco use and poor diet and exercise habits can also accelerate the loss of skin elasticity.

How Skin Elasticity Affects Results

Both liposculpture and CoolSculpting results depend on your skin envelope “shrinking” or “snapping back” into place after the fat has been removed to fit the reduced contour. Although it isn’t as critical when only a few ounces of fat are removed as in CoolSculpting or only from a small area (as in facial liposculpture procedures) when fat is removed in a significant amount from a larger area of the body, skin elasticity is a valid concern, especially in older patients

Removing volume and fat from areas with poor skin elasticity may compromise the results. In fact, removing volume from areas with saggy, loose skin may actually accentuate the laxity and worsen the silhouette by creating waviness and lumpiness.

When you meet with Dr. Moz to discuss your liposculpture and CoolSculpting options, he will evaluate your skin elasticity and discuss whether liposculpture or CoolSculpting is the appropriate solution for your needs. If he believes your skin elasticity is not sufficient for an ideal result from either CoolSculpting or liposculpture, Dr. Moz can recommend an additional alternative surgery to tighten skin.

Can You Improve Your Skin’s Elasticity?

There’s no surefire way to tighten loose skin on your own, as some factors are out of your control. But there are things you can do on your own to promote healthy skin:

  • Maintain a stable weight
  • Stay hydrated
  • Do not smoke or drink excessive amounts of alcohol
  • Exercise regularly
  • Follow a healthy diet
  • Protect your skin from the sun

The amount of loose skin left after liposculpture or CoolSculpting is no different than the amount of loose skin left after weight loss of a comparable volume of fat.
