Your facelift consultation is the ideal time to have all of your pressing questions about the procedure and your plastic surgeon answered. Asking certain questions can help you get the most out of your appointment. To guide you through this conversation, plastic surgeon Brad Mozaffari suggests a few questions to ask.

What are your qualifications?

First and foremost, you will want to ask your surgeon why they are qualified to perform facelift surgery. Inquire about their years of experience, training, board certification, continuing education and hospital privileges. Do they belong to any professional organizations, such as the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery or the American College of Surgeons?

Am I a good candidate for facelift?

Ask your surgeon whether you are a good candidate for surgery based on your age, health, skin quality and signs of aging. A reputable surgeon will be candid if they feel you cannot safely undergo surgery due to a health condition; or, if they feel you are better suited to a different facial rejuvenation procedure, they can make recommendations.

What can I expect from facelift?

Ask your surgeon to describe how you can expect to look after surgery. Discuss specific concerns, such as sagging skin or deep creases around your nose and mouth, and try to get a clear idea of how facelift can minimize those problems.

Where will my surgery be performed?

Ask your facelift surgeon where they operate and what kind of facility it is (hospital versus surgery center). Check whether the facility is accredited, licensed and up-to-date. Most plastic surgery procedures are performed on an outpatient basis (meaning you will go home a few hours after surgery) but you might want to double-check to be sure you won’t need to stay at the facility overnight.

How much time will I need to take off from work to recover from surgery?

You will need to plan to take time off from work, socializing and the rest of your normal routine to recuperate from surgery. Ask your surgeon to provide a general timeframe of how long you will need to lay low after surgery.

May I see some before-and-after images of your facelift patients?

Experienced plastic surgeons should have plenty of before-and-after images of facelift patients. Browse through some of these images to get an idea of how the surgeon’s patients looked after their surgery.
