With today’s surgical techniques and technology, there’s no reason why you should develop a “pulled” or “stretched” expression after facial plastic surgery. Facial rejuvenation procedures like facelift and eyelid surgery are designed to help turn back the clock and make you look like a younger, natural and more attractive version of yourself. Unfortunately, we have all seen celebrities who take on a perpetually surprised or windswept look after overdone plastic surgery. As long as you have the right information you need to make good choices, and an understanding, experienced surgeon you are not doomed to the same fate.

Here, Dr. Brad Mozaffari, the board-certified plastic surgeon director of Belladerma Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Care Center, shares what you can do to avoid the unnatural pulled look after plastic surgery.

Select the Right Surgeon

Dr. Moz believes that the experience and skill of your facial plastic surgeon is of critical importance. Inexperienced plastic surgeons that lack the proper surgical training are more likely to be less proficient and skilled. For example, they may pull the facial skin too tight during facelift without addressing the deeper tissues and muscles; this may create a windswept look after surgery. Alternatively, they may raise the eyebrows or hairline too high during brow lift, creating a very surprised look. They also might not personalize the procedure to match the unique needs and desires of the individual patient.

So, how do you find the right surgeon to perform your facial plastic surgery?

You can ask close friends or family members that have had plastic surgery (and look great) for a referral to their surgeon. Once you have a few names, do your homework. Browse the surgeons’ before-and-after photo galleries and look for images you find appealing. The results should indicate the surgeon has an artistic eye and touch. Some surgeons also demonstrate their artistic and musical interest and skills outside the office, like Dr. Moz, who is also a professional sculptor and musician. Learn more about their background and training, and where they perform surgery. Look at the surgeon’s credentials. Is he/she a board certified plastic surgeon, meaning they are certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery?

Ensure Your Surgeon Understands Your Unique Needs

You should expect an initial in-person consultation with the surgeon. You want to find a plastic surgeon that takes the time to listen to you and understand your personal goals of treatment. Your surgeon should be able to tailor your procedure to your aging pattern, including how much facial volume you have lost, the laxity of your skin and the presence of wrinkles. You should feel completely confident in your surgical plan and your surgeon’s ability to carry it out. Make sure your surgeon clearly understands your expectations.
