IPL Photorejuvenation in La Jolla
Treat Sun-Damaged Skin
Excessive exposure to the sun is one of the biggest threats to the health and appearance of the skin. Years of overexposure can change the pigment of the skin (e.g., brown spots, increased redness). As experienced San Diego plastic surgeons and skin care providers, Drs. Dennis Bucko and Farid Brad Mozaffari have seen a large number of individuals that are self-conscious of sun damage (also known as “photodamage”). One of the solutions they and Hilary Black, R.N., who has been a registered nurse for over 20 years, recommend is photorejuvenation with intense pulsed light (IPL). Hilary uses the Harmony XL, one of the most sophisticated platforms in aesthetic laser treatment, to help patients enjoy clearer, healthier-looking skin.
Photorejuvenation with IPL is an effective way to restore an even tone and texture to sun-damaged skin, or skin that has other kinds of irregularities. For example, photorejuvenation can be a suitable treatment for skin conditions including hyperpigmentation, rosacea and poikiloderma.
Patients love the light therapy because it is gentle and produces noticeable results with very little downtime and few side effects.
More about Photorejuvenation Treatment
Photorejuvenation with IPL is typically used to reduce sun-induced brown discoloration and facial veins/redness caused by dilated capillaries. Treatment may be used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands or shoulders.
During a treatment session, the laser-like handpiece of the IPL device emits intense pulses of light that penetrate the surface of the problematic skin. The device can use pulses of many different wavelengths of light, depending on the specific problem.
The light is absorbed by the target: either melanin in the pigmented lesion or redness of a vein or capillary. When the light reaches its target, it converts to heat. The heat causes veins to seal off and become less noticeable, and the pigment in the lesion to fragment. The body absorbs the melanin fragments, or they scab and fall off.
The intense pulses of light also heat the skin’s underlying collagen matrix, triggering the production of fresh new collagen. Collagen is a protein that is essential to firm, elastic and youthful-looking skin. Collagen production is gradual, so results will improve with time.
Dr. Bucko, Dr. Mozaffari and their team generally recommend a series of three IPL treatments, spaced several weeks apart, for maximum effectiveness. Some skin types and conditions may require additional treatments.
Since the top layer of skin is not damaged during treatment, photorejuvenation with IPL requires very little downtime. Some patients are able to return to work or their normal routine immediately after a treatment session.
IPL can be performed on its own or as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan. Hilary Black, R.N., consults with each patient individually to establish their specific concerns and goals, and then makes personalized skin care recommendations.
