IPL Photorejuvenation in La Jolla

Treat Sun-Damaged Skin

IPL in La JollaExcessive exposure to the sun is one of the biggest threats to the health and appearance of the skin. Years of overexposure can change the pigment of the skin (e.g., brown spots, increased redness). As experienced San Diego plastic surgeons and skin care providers, Drs. Brad Mozaffari and Dennis Bucko have seen a large number of individuals that are self-conscious of sun damage (also known as “photodamage”). One of the solutions they, along with Hilary Black, R.N., a registered nurse of more than 20 years, recommend is photorejuvenation with intense pulsed light (IPL). Hilary uses the Harmony XL, one of the most sophisticated platforms in aesthetic laser treatment, to help patients enjoy clearer, healthier-looking skin.

Patients love the light therapy because it is gentle and produces noticeable results with very little to no downtime. Other advantages include the fact that treatment is non-invasive, and can be done on any area of the body.

What IPL Photorejuvenation Treats

Photorejuvenation with IPL is an effective way to address the following skin problems:

  • Uneven skin tone
  • Poor skin texture
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Rosacea
  • Poikiloderma
  • Facial veins
  • Skin discoloration
  • Redness
  • Acne

Treatment may be used to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, chest, arms, hands or shoulders.

How It Works

Photorejuvenation in La JollaDuring a treatment session, the laser-like handpiece of the IPL device emits intense pulses of light of a specific wavelength that penetrate the surface of the problematic skin. The device can use pulses of many different wavelengths of light, depending on the specific problem.

The light is absorbed by the target: either melanin in the pigmented lesion or redness of a vein or capillary. When the light reaches its target, it converts to heat. The heat causes veins to seal off and become less noticeable, and the pigment in the lesion to fragment. The body absorbs the melanin fragments, or they become flakey and fall off.

The intense pulses of light also heat the skin’s underlying collagen matrix, triggering the production of fresh new collagen. Collagen is a protein that is essential to firm, elastic and youthful-looking skin. Collagen production is gradual, so results will improve with time.

About the Harmony XL

The Harmony XL laser is one of the most versatile systems in the market. It consists of multiple modules that offer powerful results for six major skin concerns: skin remodeling, vascular lesions, pigmented lesions, tone and texture, hair removal and acne. The versatility of the Harmony platform allows our Belladerma team to provide customized treatment for each individual and the area that is being treated. The Harmony XL is able to deliver results without affecting the surface of the skin and causing serious side effects.

How Many Treatments Will You Need?

Dr. Mozaffari, Dr. Bucko, and their team generally recommend a series of three IPL treatments, spaced several weeks apart, for maximum effectiveness. Some skin types and conditions may require additional treatments.

What to Expect After Treatment

Since the top layer of skin is not damaged during treatment, photorejuvenation with IPL requires very little, if any, downtime. Some patients are able to return to work or their normal routine immediately after a treatment session.

IPL can be performed on its own or as part of a comprehensive skin rejuvenation plan. Hilary Black, R.N., consults with each patient individually to establish their specific concerns and goals, and then makes personalized skin care recommendations.

FAQs

What is the difference between IPL and laser resurfacing?

IPL photorejuvenation uses broad spectrum light to address an array of skin concerns in one session. Laser skin resurfacing uses a single wavelength of light to deliver precise energy and address specific skin issues. In addition, IPL therapy is typically gentler than laser resurfacing.

Does treatment hurt?

Treatment with IPL typically does not hurt. A cooling gel is applied on the treated area(s) prior to treatment, so patients feel very little discomfort.

What are the side effects?

Minor and temporary side effects may include mild swelling, soreness, tenderness and redness in the treated areas. These side effects typically subside a few days after treatment.

How long do results last?

With proper care and follow-up sessions, the results of IPL can last many years. The key is to practice good skin care habits, including regularly applying sunscreen and using medical-grade skin care products.

Is treatment effective on all skin types?

IPL photorejuvenation is effective on all skin types. Our Belladerma team customizes treatment to the specific needs of each patient to ensure their full comfort.

How much does treatment cost?

Treatment cost varies depending on the number of treatment areas, treatment size and the degree of correction needed. The Belladerma team provides an accurate cost estimate during an in-office evaluation.
