FAQ about Cosmetic Surgery in la Jolla
Do I need to replace my breast implants every 10 years?
This is one of the well-known myths among patients who have breast implants. Patients often call to come in for a consultation because they’ve had their implants for 10+ years and think it might be time to replace them. Dr. Bucko and Dr. Mozaffari’s opinion is that if you are happy with the way your breasts look and feel, there’s no reason to replace them. Some patients find that after 10+ years their breasts are larger or smaller than they’d like, or that the shape and/or position of the breasts have changed. Those are all valid reasons to come in and consult about additional surgery, which may or may not involve replacing your implants.
I am interested in a brow lift but don’t want to look surprised – is that possible?
Absolutely! With Dr. Bucko and Dr. Mozaffari’s years of experience, they are well aware that most women don’t want to look “surprised” or end up with eyebrows that are unnaturally too high after their procedure. Dr. Bucko and Dr. Mozaffari commonly recommend a brow lift to patients’ whose brows have dropped down due to the aging process. With a brow lift he can lift your brows to their original position, giving you a more youthful appearance. During your consultation and the morning of your surgery, Dr. Bucko or Dr. Mozaffari will discuss where you want your brows – high enough to portray youthfulness, but low enough that you are comfortable.
How soon can I exercise after my surgery?
With most procedures, Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari recommend that you limit your activities and keep your heart rate down for at least 2 weeks after surgery. Depending on which procedures you’ve had done and how you’re healing, you can slowly get back into your exercise routine as directed by Dr. Bucko or Dr. Mozaffari.
After breast surgery, when can I wear a normal bra/ underwire?
Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari recommend that you wear the surgical bra that we provide for you, or something similar, for at least 2 weeks after surgery, or as directed. After that, you’re welcome to wear whichever bra you want, just as long as you’re comfortable.
How will I know if my saline/ silicone implant is ruptured or torn?
If your saline implant has torn & leaked, you will notice your breast becoming smaller and softer over a few hours or days. With silicone, you probably will not be aware that the implant has torn because the gel usually remains in place. Usually an MRI is the only way to tell, and even then it’s not 100% accurate. Silicone implants are a lot less likely to be a problem so it’s not really something we worry about. And if it does tear, since it’s not dangerous to your health, you usually do not have to replace the torn implant.
Which is better – saline or silicone?
The final decision on which implant type is better is really up to each individual patient depending on what type of result they’re looking for, or what they’re most comfortable with. Dr. Bucko, Dr. Mozaffari and their Surgical Coordinator will give you all the information you need to make an educated decision. With that being said, the majority of our patients choose silicone implants. They are fully approved by the FDA, feel more like a natural breast and are less likely to be replaced.
Do you do fat transfers?
Although Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari have experience with fat transfers, they do not recommend them. In their experience they have found that fat transfers are not reliable in that we cannot predict the results. There’s always a certain amount of fat that will be reabsorbed into the body and there’s no way to know how much will be reabsorbed, and how much will not. So the result is a little unpredictable. There’s also a risk of infection and lumpiness if your skin tolerates it. Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari recommend using temporary fillers or surgical implants instead.
How long does Botox or Dysport last?
Botox and Dysport typically last about 3-4 months. Since every patient is different, the length of results can vary. Some patients come back when they notice a little bit of muscle movement, and some wait until all of the Botox or Dysport has completely worn off.
How long does Restylane or Juvederm last?
These fillers typically last about 6-9 months. But like Botox, the longevity varies so patients come back for more when they notice the lines or wrinkles coming back, or wait until it wears off. For more about dermal fillers and results, click here. (link to dermal fillers page)
What is the longest lasting filler?
As of now, the longest lasting filler is Bellafill. Clinical studies have shown that it can last up to 9 years, or longer. Since it is considered permanent filler, and costs more than the other fillers, Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari recommend trying temporary filler, like Restylane or Juvederm to make sure you are happy with the results.
Do you offer a non-invasive approach to skin tightening?
Yes, Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari offer a technology called Skin Firming with the Harmony XL platform. The Harmony uses pulsed infrared light to heat the dermis, inducing the formation of collagen, which is essential for a firm, youthful look. With the use of topical numbing cream and a cool gel applied before the treatment, the treatment is almost painless, with no skin ablation and no “downtime”. Patients notice a natural, subtle result.
Can I use Retin-A everyday?
Retin-A may cause dryness or flakiness in your skin when you first begin using it. Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari recommend using it a few times a week, or every other day and then working up to everyday, if your skin can tolerate it. However, you’ll want to discontinue use a week before a chemical peel, or as directed by your aesthetician or doctor.
Does Latisse really work?
Yes! Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari have seen amazing results in all patients who use it as directed. Latisse is FDA approved to lengthen your eye lashes within 4-6 weeks of everyday use. The results will last as long as you’re using the product. Once your lashes have reached your desired length, you can cut back use of the product to every other night, or just a couple times a week.
Do you have anything that will shrink my pores?
We can minimize the appearance of pores, but can’t actually shrink the pores.
Resurfacing of the skin is often recommended to smooth texture and appearance of the skin. Various treatments such as the Belladerma Peel, the Belladerma Diamond Peel and FX Laser are designed to improve texture and appearance of skin. The Belladerma Peels are a more mild approach but with multiple treatments over time, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and the appearance of pores can be minimized. The FX Laser is a more aggressive form of skin resurfacing, and is also the most affective, delivering even greater results than the Belladerma Peels.
Another way to minimize the appearance of pores is to minimize oil production in the skin. Using the glycolic products in Belladerma’s skin care line would be a great way to start. These products consist of the 10% Glycolic Moisturizing Cleanser, Glycolic Toner and Glycolic Treatment Cream.
What’s the downtime for your office-based chemical peels?
Just to be safe, you’ll always want to give yourself about a week of downtime. Since every peel can vary from patient to patient, and depending on the strength of the peel, it’s safe to say that you’ll usually start to peel about 48 hrs after your treatment, and will peel for about 3-5 days. Most patients are comfortable working and continuing with their daily activities, but limit their social engagements (events, dinner dates, parties) until they are fully healed.
What kind of facials do you offer?
We offer a variety of facials. We recommend that you come in for a complimentary skin evaluation and one of Belladerma’s medical aestheticians can recommend and/or customize a facial just for you.
