Also known as abdominoplasty, tummy tuck surgery is a cosmetic body contouring procedure designed to reduce accumulated belly fat, repair weakened abdominal muscles and remove excess sagging skin. While not a substitute for a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, healthy eating, and appropriate medical advice, tummy tuck can address fat deposits and loose skin that do not respond to healthy lifestyle choices.

Anyone considering tummy tuck should be aware of the post-operative side effects, including swelling. Swelling can be uncomfortable and make wearing regular clothes challenging. Fortunately, things like compression garments and loose-fitting clothing may provide relief following surgery.

In this blog post, Dr. Moz goes into more detail about what happens after tummy tuck surgery and what to wear during that period of time to stay comfortable.

What Happens After Tummy Tuck Surgery?

Recovery duration and discomfort levels vary based on the treatment, technique and individual. Generally, symptoms during recovery include bruising, swelling and minor discomfort (which can be quelled with oral medication). Compression garments as well as loose clothing are helpful for improving overall quality of life during the recovery process.

Clothing Options

In the post-operative period of tummy tuck surgery, swelling can cause everyday clothing to become uncomfortable and unwearable. Clothing options that may improve comfort include:

  • Compression garments: Also known as binder garments, compression garments are advised to patients after they undergo a tummy tuck operation. The rationale for this is that compression garments put pressure on the healing tissues and help reduce drainage and swelling. The exact garment is recommended by the surgeon prior to the operation.
  • Workout or yoga pants: Having comfortable pants with a stretchy waistband that you can easily take on and off following tummy tuck surgery is ideal. Workout or yoga pants are excellent pant options that will assist in providing enhanced comfort during healing. They should be big enough to fit over bandages and the compression garment.
  • Button-up shirts: Range of motion is limited after surgery and it may be uncomfortable to raise your hands all the way over your head to pull on a shirt or sweater. Button-up shirts or sweaters that zip up in the front will be easier to manage and help improve overall comfort.
