What Is a Facelift Procedure?

Facelift surgery addresses sagging, folds, creases, wrinkles, and displaced fat that occurs as part of the aging process. This is typically reserved for advanced signs of aging when other treatments do not produce the desired results.  There are several different types of face lifts and Dr. Moz has expertise in peforming all of them.

What is a Deep Plane Facelift?

The term Deep Plane describes the anatomic plane between muscles of facial expression and the muscle and facia complex called SMAS-platysma. As the name suggests, this facelift is done by influencing the movement of the deeper layers of fat and muscle tissue and less on pulling the skin. Releasing ligaments helps to keep the muscle movement free of tension and keeps the skin from tightening that is present with traditional facelifts.  Traditionally the skin of the face would be pulled more horizontally to flatten out the wrinkles. This impacted the corners of the mouth and the eyes as they were pulled and the face and the cheek looked flat. However, with deep plane facelift, the patient will have a more natural look with smooth features.  This is accomplished as angles of the lift are changed to be more vertical for maximum rejuvination. The vertical facelift angles will differ with age and Dr. Moz adjusts that angle to make sure the patient gets the most optimum result.

How Is a Facelift Performed?

Incisions are made along the hairline and around the ear. The tissue is pulled taut over the face to create a younger and natural appearance. Dr. Mozaffari may opt to tighten facial muscles and reposition fat during the procedure.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from My Facelift?

The initial recovery period for facelift typically takes two to three weeks. Initial symptoms should subside within two weeks after surgery, while minor swelling and bruising may last a bit longer but can easily be concealed with makeup. A simple Belladerma Mini Facelift™ creates less swelling and bruising.

Most patients return to work and resume normal activities one to three weeks after surgery. Patients can typically resume (or start) light exercise two weeks after surgery depending on their healing, the degree of surgery, and their job requirements. We will provide a more accurate timeline of when you can resume normal activities and exercise during your initial consultation. We may also make modifications during your recovery based on your healing process.

Are the Results of My Facelift Permanent?

When performed by a talented and skilled facelift surgeon (and with proper maintenance), the results of any facelift can last for many years. Although it can turn back the hands of time, it is does not stop the aging process. Good skin care (e.g., using the right skin care products, moisturizing regularly) and lifestyle habits (e.g., wearing sunscreen, not smoking) can help prolong your facelift results.

Drs. Bucko and Mozaffari also recommend maintaining your results with injectable (e.g., Botox®, dermal fillers) or professional skin care (e.g., photorejuvenation) treatments regularly. See the results in our facelift surgery before and after pictures.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Facelift?

Facelift candidates are usually concerned about one or more of the following:

  • Loose, sagging skin in the face, cheek, brow, neck, and jowl area
  • Puffy eyelids
  • Creases along the lower eyelids
  • Creases along the nose to the corners of the mouth
  • Displaced or fallen fat
  • Loss of healthy skin tone
  • Excess fat deposits underneath the chin and jawline
  • Wrinkles
  • Cords or bands on the neck

Based on their analysis of the patient, Dr. Mozaffari drafts a plan of treatment that will outline various options with specific results in mind. This could be traditional facelift surgery, or a Belladerma Mini Facelift™, a less-invasive alternative to the standard facelift techniques.

Can a Facelift Be Performed with Other Procedures?

A browlift or forehead lift may also be done at the same time to rejuvenate the upper face and eyelids. Earlobe reduction may be performed on its own or during facelift surgery to repair oversized, elongated, or droopy earlobes that may give subtle clues to the aging process. Redundant skin and tissue is removed to create a shorter, smaller lobe. Some patients will even include minor nasal surgery to lift a droopy tip, or a chin implant to create a stronger profile.

Facelift FAQs

At what age should you get a facelift?

Knowing when to get a facelift isn’t so much based on your chronological age, but, rather, the aged appearance of your skin. In general, people may want to consider a facelift from their 40s to their 60s. Signs of aging that may indicate it’s time for a facelift are deep wrinkles and creases, as well as moderate to severe sagging. Facelift surgery is typically recommended when non-surgical options no longer provide the desired degree of correction. You should also be aware that facelift surgery may not help with more superficial signs of aging, such as dark spots. In these cases, Dr. Mozaffari recommends other treatments be performed in conjunction with a facelift.

How much younger will I look after a facelift?

Facelift surgery produces dramatic results, and patients report that they look 10 to 15 years younger. On average, patients can expect to take about 12 years off their appearances with facelift surgery.

How long does it take to look normal after a facelift?

Most of the swelling and bruising subsides after four weeks. Full results take up to six months.
