How Is Laser Hair Removal Performed?

Prior to a treatment session, cold gel or a special cooling device is used to protect the outer layers of the skin. The hair to be treated should be trimmed or shaved close to the skin.

We use the Lumenis® LightSheer ET Diode system for laser hair removal. During treatment, the laser device handpiece is placed above the area of unwanted hair, and emits a fine beam of intense light. The laser is specifically calibrated to the skin color and hair color/thickness/location.

The light passes through the skin and is attracted to the pigment in the hair follicles. It heats up and destroys the hair follicles. The handpiece is slowly moved across the treatment area until it has treated all of the follicles in the active growth phase.

What Can I Expect During Recovery from Laser Hair Removal?

The skin may be slightly red and feel sensitive for the first 24 hours.

What Results Can I Expect from Laser Hair Removal?

Individuals with dark, coarse hair and light skin will see the best results because of the discrepancy between hair and skin colors. With lighter skin, the laser light is able to find the hair follicle, and darker hairs absorb more of the laser light.

Is Laser Hair Removal Painful?

Treatment is not painful, and lasts about an hour, depending on the size of the treatment area. Patients may receive an ice pack or soothing lotion to reduce any post-treatment irritation or discomfort. Side effects and complications are very rare.

Treatments are spaced eight weeks apart. Once all of the hair follicles have been treated, the results are generally permanent. If the hair does grow back, it looks finer, lighter and sparser.
