Microdermabrasion in La Jolla
Microdermabrasion for a Better Complexion
Microdermabrasion, available at Belladerma Cosmetic Surgery & Skin Care Center’s licensed aesthetician, gently polishes the skin for a brighter, healthier looking complexion. It is an excellent way to minimize imperfections such as fine lines, sun spots, clogged pores and blemishes, or to simply freshen the skin. The aesthetician often recommends microdermabrasion as a painless, low-risk component of a regular beauty routine. Patients tolerate treatment well and see almost-instant improvement in the appearance of their skin.
More about Microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion involves removing the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresh, healthy skin cells. This can minimize the appearance of superficial imperfections such as:
- Fine lines
- Crow’s feet
- Sun spots
- Clogged pores
Since microdermabrasion treatment does not penetrate very deeply in the skin, it is not as effective on deeper wrinkles, birthmarks, tattoos or scars, but the skin recovers very rapidly. After microdermabrasion, the skin exudes a beautiful glow, and absorbs topical products (like moisturizer and serum) more easily. Treatment is virtually painless and results are immediate, with no downtime.
During a microdermabrasion treatment session, a special handheld device sprays microcrystals on the surface of the skin. This abrades and exfoliates dry, dead skin cells. The dead cells and crystals are removed from the skin via light suction. This process is not painful, but the delicate area around the eyes may be a little more sensitive. After running the device across the face, topical products may be applied to the skin to hydrate and protect it. Almost instantly, the skin looks more even in tone and texture.
An additional benefit of microdermabrasion is that it stimulates the body to produce more collagen and elastin, two proteins essential to firm, elastic and beautiful skin. As the body’s levels of collagen and elastin rise, the appearance of the skin improves.
Microdermabrasion is non-invasive and does not require significant downtime. Patients may return to work or normal activities almost immediately after treatment. The risk of serious side effects is very low. The treated skin may look slightly pink or red (like a mild sunburn or windburn) but the redness will quickly dissipate.
The aesthetician might recommend a series of microdermabrasion treatments, spaced two to four weeks apart, for the best results. An occasional touch-up treatment can be helpful after completing the initial treatment regimen.
Microdermabrasion can be combined with another facial procedure (surgical or non-surgical) to target a different area of concern or specific feature. For example, dermal filler products can add youthful volume and contours to the face.
