Interest in plastic surgery continues to grow. Americans spent more than $16.5 billion on cosmetic procedures in 2018, according to the latest statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The statistics also reveal that nearly a quarter million more cosmetic procedures were performed in 2018 than the previous year.
So what were the most popular surgical and non-surgical cosmetic procedures in 2018? Here, Dr. Dennis Bucko and Dr. Brad Mozaffari break down the latest statistics from ASPS.
Breast Augmentation Continues to Reign Supreme
A total of 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed in 2018, and for the thirteenth year in a row, breast augmentation was the top surgical procedure. Over 313,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed last year, a 4 percent increase from the previous year. Rounding out the top five were liposuction (up 5 percent), rhinoplasty (down 2 percent), eyelid surgery (down 1 percent) and tummy tuck (no change from the previous year).
More than 15.9 Million Minimally Invasive Procedures Were Performed
The statistics reveal that minimally invasive cosmetic procedures have risen a whopping 200 percent since 2000. A total of 15.9 million minimally invasive procedures were performed in 2018. Treatment with botulinum toxin type A products, like Botox, came out on top with more than 7 million procedures and up 3 percent from 2017. The other top minimally invasive procedures were dermal fillers, chemical peels, laser hair removal, and microdermabrasion.
Surgical and Non-Surgical Body Sculpting Procedures Grow
The ASPS found that there was a surge in cosmetic procedures focusing on sculpting the body. While liposuction continues to be the top body contouring procedure, non-surgical alternatives like CoolSculpting are becoming popular. Surgical procedures like liposuction offer the most comprehensive results, but CoolSculpting and other non-surgical procedures allow men and women to enhance their curves and figures without the downtime, surgery, anesthesia or potential risks that come with surgery.
