It is well known that tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can have a tremendous impact on the appearance of your abdomen. Loose, excess skin and stubborn fat are removed and the underlying muscles are tightened, revealing a flatter and firmer contour. But you may be surprised to learn that the cosmetic procedure can also improve certain health issues. Here, Dr. Brad Mozaffari explains the possible health benefits of tummy tuck.

Urinary Incontinence

Urinary incontinence is common after vaginal birth. The condition is characterized by involuntary leakage of urine when laughing, sneezing, coughing or exercising. Studies have found that tummy tuck can help alleviate symptoms of urinary incontinence. During tummy tuck, a slight bladder obstruction can be created using soft tissue near the pelvic area. This strengthens the abdominal and pelvic regions, improving urinary incontinence.

Back Pain

Weakened abdominal muscles, whether it be after major weight loss or vaginal birth, can cause the back to overcompensate, leading to back pain and poor posture. Many tummy tuck patients are relieved to find out that the procedure can relieve these painful symptoms. By suturing together separated muscles and removing excess fat and skin, the core is strengthened and back pain and posture are improved.

Ventral Hernia

A ventral hernia occurs when the intestine or abdominal tissue breaks through the abdominal wall, creating a pouch or sack that is often painful. It can be a result of abdominal weakness after major weight loss, an appendectomy or cesarean section. Tummy tuck and ventral hernia correction are similar procedures in that they strengthen the weakened abdominal muscles to reduce pressure on the skin. The two procedures can be safely performed together.
