Tummy tuck continues to be one of the most frequently requested body contouring procedures for a flatter and firmer abdomen. However, not all tummy tucks are performed using the same technique. For many patients, a drainless tummy tuck can offer a number of advantages over the traditional technique that involves the placement of drains during recovery.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Brad Mozaffari has performed many successful drainless tummy tuck procedures. Here, he shares the benefits you can expect with the drainless technique.

Traditional Tummy Tuck vs. Drainless Tummy Tuck

In traditional tummy tuck, drainage tubes are put in place after surgery to prevent fluid accumulation (seroma) between the abdominal wall and the healing tissues. The drains are typically removed by the surgeon 4 to 14 days after surgery.

Although drains play an important role in healing and preventing infections and other complications after surgery, they come with several downsides. Many patients describe the drains as uncomfortable to manage, painful to move with and difficult to conceal under clothing. If not managed and cared for properly, the drains can clog and/or lead to an infection. Having to deal with drains is one of the most common complaints patients have after a tummy tuck procedure.

During drainless tummy tucks, Dr. Mozaffari uses progressive tension sutures and a quilting technique to attach the abdominal skin to the underlying tissues. This leaves little room for fluid to accumulate, eliminating the need for drains.

Drainless Tummy Tuck Benefits

Drainless tummy tuck patients report enhanced comfort and peace of mind compared to traditional tummy tuck patients. No drains means patients can shower sooner (the day after surgery) and don’t have to worry about hiding drains under clothing. Patients also have less anxiety about having to deal with drains and the possibility of seroma or an infection. Thanks to this technique and the injection of a long-lasting, non-narcotic pain medication called Exparel during surgery, drainless tummy tuck patients report less pain. They are also able to move around after surgery sooner than patients with drains.
