When it comes to planning your breast augmentation surgery, there are several important decisions you need to make. As the patient, you have the final say as to what looks best on your body and what makes you feel the most confident. A board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Brad Mozaffari will work closely with you to help you make confident decisions in regards to your breast implant choices and other aspects of breast augmentation. Here, Dr. Mozaffari explain some of the decisions you will need to make when planning your procedure.

Breast Implant Type

Breast implants are filled with either a saline solution or silicone gel. Each type comes with its own advantages and disadvantages. For instance, many women prefer silicone gel implants as the material closely mimics the look and feel of natural breast tissue. However, ruptures and leaks are harder to detect in silicone implants than in their saline counterparts.

Ultimately, choosing between saline and silicone implants comes down to personal preference. Both types have undergone rigorous testing for many years by the FDA and are safe to use.

Implant Size

Every woman has her own idea with regard to ideal breast size. Although you may already have an idea of what size you would like to achieve, we advise you to listen to your doctor’s recommendations. The decision will be yours to make but your doctor will discuss with you important information to consider when choosing your implant size, including your body proportions, measurements and lifestyle factors. Here at Belladerma we send our patients home with a Belladerma Sizing Kit so they can try on implants in the comfort of their own home, ultimately resulting in the implant size that best fits their ideal breasts.

In order to achieve natural looking results, the radius of the implant should be at most the width of your breast. If the implant footprint is larger than the footprint of the breast, it will result in an obvious “augmented” look. Sometimes a woman’s breasts are different sizes, and in these cases, different size implants can be used to try to achieve better symmetry.

Incision Technique

There are three main types of incision techniques used to place breast implants. The inframammary incision is a horizontal incision created underneath the natural fold of the breast. Scarring is not visible when the breast is in its natural resting position and can be easily concealed by a bra or bikini.

The periareolar incision is made along the edge of the areola. The color change between the areola and the natural skin camouflages the resulting scar. A third incision technique is the transaxillary incision, which is made in the armpit. Although this technique avoids any scarring on the breast, it is associated with a higher risk of implant malposition. Depending on your anatomy and your goals, your plastic surgeon will help you decide which incision technique would be the safest and the least visible, in order to deliver the best possible outcome.

Implant Placement

Breast implants can be placed above (subglandular placement) or underneath (submuscular placement) the chest muscle. There are pros and cons with each placement method, although some patients prefer the submuscular placement as it minimizes the chance of implants being visible underneath the skin’s surface.
