What Makes a Woman a Good Candidate for Breast Augmentation?

In a recent post, Dr. Brad Mozaffari reveals the 2018 plastic surgery trends and statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. In the post, they explained that breast augmentation continues to be the most popular procedure nationwide.

Our team knows many women may be interested in breast augmentation – you might be one of them! To help educate you about the procedure, we thought it would be helpful to review requirements for candidacy.

Naturally Small Breasts, or Breasts that Lost Volume after Nursing

If you have naturally small breasts, or some of your breast volume disappeared after nursing, you might be an excellent candidate for breast augmentation. If you lack the cleavage you desire, your breasts are asymmetrical or look “flat” or shapeless, you could benefit from the placement of saline or silicone implants.

Are 18 or 22 (Depending on the Implant)

Saline implants are FDA approved for use in women over the age of 18. Silicone implants are approved for use in women over the age of 22.

In Good Physical Health

You should be in good physical health to undergo surgery. You should not have any medical conditions (e.g., diabetes, heart problems) that could affect your healing progress or increase the risks of surgery. You may be asked to undergo some breast checks to ensure you do not have any breast conditions that could lead to complications.

If you smoke, you should quit several weeks prior to surgery and avoid smoking until you have healed from the operation.

You should also be in a good frame of mind at the time of your surgery. Making permanent changes to your body is nothing to take lightly.

Well Informed about the Procedure

If you are considering breast augmentation, do your homework to find out what the procedure entails and what your implant options are. This can help you have more productive conversations with your plastic surgeon. You should also educate yourself about the risks associated with breast augmentation in order to make informed decisions.

Reasonable Goals

You should have a good understanding of what breast augmentation can and cannot achieve (e.g., it can increase the size and fullness of your breasts but it cannot lift sagging breasts). Dr. Mozaffari will be forthcoming with you about what is reasonable to expect. If he feels another procedure would be better, he will recommend an alternative treatment plan.
